How do you install composite decking properly so it lasts and doesn’t fail over time? In this short, I walk you through how to install composite deck boards using a hidden fastener system and share a few key tips to avoid common mistakes.
Composite decking is made from a mix of wood fiber and plastic, which makes it strong and low maintenance—but only if it’s installed correctly. Most boards are designed with grooves for hidden fasteners, which means no screws through the surface and a much cleaner finish.
When I start an install, especially up against the house, I always snap a chalk line first to make sure everything is straight. From there, I use the proper hardware—usually stainless steel screws with a T15 bit—and a clip system that fastens into the joist and locks into the groove of the board.

What I’m doing in this video:
• Installing composite deck boards with hidden fasteners
• Setting up the first row with a chalk line
• Using clips to maintain consistent spacing
• Compressing boards with a straightener for tight joints
• Driving screws properly to avoid damaging clips
Key installation tips:
• Don’t overpower your drill—lower the clutch setting
• Use a slow trigger when fastening into plastic clips
• Don’t drive screws too deep or you’ll crack the clip
• Set multiple rows before fastening to keep spacing consistent
