Your Thinset Is Probably Too Thick

Your Thinset Is Probably Too Thick

Your Thinset Is Probably Too Thick

In this video, I’m showing you the proper thinset consistency and application technique for a tile installation, especially when you’re working in a shower or any area where slope and water drainage matter.

The key is mixing your thinset nice and loose — almost loose enough that it feels hard to control. If your thinset is too thick, it won’t spread properly and you can end up using too much material in the wrong place. For this application, I’m using a 1/8-inch by 1/8-inch notched trowel to control the amount of thinset and keep the installation clean and consistent.

You can apply thinset over the material while it’s still wet, but the important part is removing the excess. Underneath, you have a little more room to be generous. On top, you need to be very specific. Too much thinset on top can change the slope of your tile installation, and in a shower, that matters. If water ever gets behind the tile, you still want it to drain properly instead of sitting where it shouldn’t.

This is one of those small tiling details that can make a big difference in the final result. The right thinset consistency, the right trowel size, and the right application technique help protect your shower slope and give you a better tile installation.
